Trinny and Suzannah, where are you?

It's my company do this Saturday evening. We are all off to watch The Producers, followed by dinner and drinks at The Hilton, Park Lane.

The question is, what to wear? The invite requests "smart casual", but what does that mean? My idea of casual is far from smart...

I would ask Michael, but every time I go to him for fashion advice, he just puts his head in his hands, shakes his head and sighs.

Well, anyway, I think I'll just go for a suit. It's that or jeans; I don't own anything in between. I've only worn my suit once, at Tulna's wedding, so it will be nice to get some use out of it, and it will feel like dressing up. Notes to self; dry cleaning, and a new shirt and tie.

Any advice from any of my less fashion-blind readers would be appreciated. What kind of ties are people wearing this century?

Right now, those who are in the know are wearing Road Runner and Taz ties. Go for a black background and wear it with a black shirt. Dapper personified, and this summer's must-have.

Even *I* know better than that, Zorro.

I'd think that suggestion came from Mark (black shirt, bad taste tie) except that he'd never have spelled and punctuated the whole thing correctly.

Suit - good. With nice crisp shirt and good quality tie. Get someone with an eye for colour to tell you if it goes with the suit.

It doesn't matter what you wear Simon, you'll never pull the smart bit off

Simon, just polish your shoes. Everyone will be so dazzled by the reflection of any adjacent lights that they won't be able to tell what else you're wearing.

Failing that, what Katherine said. I tend to favour a grey or dark blue suite with a crisp white shirt (double cuffs are nice, but probably a bit poncy for you) and a non-cartoon tie.

El P - I refer you to http://www.brunningonline.net/simon/blog/galleries/dan_and_abby_wedding_gallery_02/dsc00229.html

Andy - good idea. Better still, I could polish my head!

The phrase "smart casual" chills me to the core.
It also confuses me.
I still don't know what it means.

Anyway, play it safe and wear your suit. Everyone will be slightly in awe of you for looking so smart.
As Katherine says, get someone to help you match the colours - and no comedy ties!

For goodness sake Simon, how old *are* you.
Despite pointedly not being asked; you have smart clothes and you have ( rather more ) casual clothes, but you don't have smart casual clothes.
Simon did once express some interest in some strictly manly advice on clothes, with no funny business naturally, but when he realised that it actually involved time and effort, like trying stuff on, he immediately lost interest. So if you're not actually interested, I can only conclude that you're really after some sympathy. So there there, you look lovely...no, really!

Thanks you, Michael. I feel much better now.

"smart casual" = "polo shirt without holes". In my dictionary, anyway...
