Time for a new host

Ever since I upgraded SVoC, the comment system has been completely shagged. The problem seems to lie not with MT 2.661 as such, but rather with my host, 1&1. I always got the occasional 500, but now I get them all the time, and it seems I'm not alone. Upgrading MT has exacerbated the problem, since it seems a little more resource-hungry now, but the ultimate issue is with 1&1's low resource thresholds.

This is just the straw which breaks the camel's back, frankly, since they've been pissing me off for a while. Their support, well, doesn't, and I can't find anything on the admin screens, even when they don't hang. So, a new host.

I hear good things about 34SP. Any other suggestions? Who do you use?

Oh, and if you comment, don't be surprised if you get a 500 - in fact, you almost certainly will. I'll be able to rebuild the HTML to show your comments manually.

And thanks to Aaron for his kind offer, but I run a few sub-sites, so I'll probably go for a paid-for host. I split the cost with other family members.

Update: With Dad being ill and all, I'll not be able to get around to this for a while. But the move will happen eventually...

They're good.

Positive do look good - except that I see Perl, PHP and Java, but no Python!

I'll email them, 'cos I can't believe that they don't allow Python. Other than that, they look *great*. Java would be a real bonus - I don't have that currently.

I use http://www.2020media.com very good service, nice techies (I went to college with them), lots of cgi/java hosting options, very reasonable. And they are good laugh down the pub. fun.javanicus.com/fsm is running on their tomcat instance (I have my own instance which i can start/stop without hurting others) bandwidth is the key payfor service

2020media look *seriously* expensive, I must say, Jez. It looks like I'd need the Java+ package (£300 a year) plus some more disk space to get what I'd need - you get the same and more from Positive for £125 a year[2].

Positive Internet got back to me, and they *do* support Python. They look *much* better value for money than 2020media or cornerhost, so I'll look seriously into transferring.

You get 1000MB of storage, all the bandwidth you can eat, Python, Tomcat, Perl, MySQL, FTP and SSH, plus all the standard stuff, all for a tenner a month. Looks like a *bargain* to me.

Or am I stupidly missing something crucial that is missing from Positive Internet's hosting package?

Posted by: Simon Brunning on June 8, 2004 02:33 PM

Cornerhost comes in at $100 a year, by my reckoning thats about £60 and therefore much *less* than a tenner a month ;-)

Of course they don't have any of that Java rubbish, but you can install it yourself if you really want to.

Posted by: Andy Todd on June 8, 2004 02:52 PM

Cornerhost's $100-a-year package doesn't offer enough storage or email accounts. You can add them, of course, but that takes you up to Positive Internet's price range - and Positive Internet seems to offer you much more.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be transferring to them in the near future, so I'll let you all know how I get on.

I use gradwell : http://www.gradwell.com/

Probably not the cheapest around, but offer everything you need for MT and then some, nice control panel, and very helpful support department. You even get free SMS alerts whenever any of their services have an outage or are getting upgraded etc. Last month's uptime was ~99.7%. Developer account for about £100 will get you what you want, and I think that even includes a free domain registration (or at least it used to). I use them and have had no complaints in the ten months or so since I started blogging.

could you not host your site at work? I'm sure they wouldn't notice you using their pipe! ;-)

Posted by: Mark Boyce on June 8, 2004 10:36 PM

Yes, I'm sure Intrepid won't notice! Like it doesn't notice the thousands of junk emails... :)

Damn, I should be on Positive's referral programme! :-)

I use JaguarPC: http://jaguarpc.com/

Pretty cheap and mostly cheerful, Python 1.52 is the default, although 2.1 and 2.2 are available too.

I host a few sites on Postitve and they *used* to be great. But service levels are gradually dropping, the support is getting slower (AND they've told me some blatant porkies recently), their user forum has been down 'for maintenance' (yeah) for some months and, frankly, if I wasn't already there I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. The whole reason I found this blog was by looking for other positive users to compare notes with! It all started to go pear shaped last year, about the time they moved their servers to Telecity. Just MHO, of course. Would love to hear from anyone else using their 'z' (shared) hosting....

I recommend a UserModeLinux based VPS from RimuHosting - http://www.rimuhosting.com

Take a look at http://www.westhost.com/ I have been using them for quite sometime. Pretty good.
For Java hosting I use lfchosting.com.

I recommend http://www.csoft.net/

Flat-rate bandwidth and Python among other things and their service is excellent.

Definitely check out TextDrive. They are having a limited time offer right now to get lifetime hosting for $399. I'm a happy customer, and so are others, including the Pragmatic Programmers and A List Apart.

Better get it before it goes away, though.

May I suggest http://www.pythonhosting.co.uk/ ? We have accounts from £4 a month, a long-standing commitment to open source software and excellent customer service if I do say so myself. Our pricelist is at http://www.pythonhosting.co.uk/pricelist.html

I'd recommend csoft as well. I've used them for years and have no reason to move.

If you want someone in the same timezone, I'd also recommend UKShells, http://www.ukshells.co.uk/
