Free CD

I'm currently currently doing some work for a large music publisher, on site. (Regular readers will have read me whinging about this for some time.) Its employees get rather a good perk - six free CDs a month. Of course, as a consultant, I don't get this perk - but yesterday, there was a spare promo copy of the new Gomez album, Split the Difference, and it was offered to me. Cool!

I've been introduced to a few new bands while I've been here. Some of them have been great; Muse, in particular, are fantastic, but The Streets, The Zutons and The Razmus have also impressed me, amongst others.

But, of course, there are a few bands that were not so much to my taste. There's been a lot of bland dance and rap music which I've just let flow over me - not my cup of tea.

Then there's The Divine Comedy. What's that all about? It's not just bad, it's so bad that I thought that I must be missing something, that perhaps I was listening with my sense of irony dialed down too low or something. But now I think I've worked them out. It's the perfect music for today's teenagers to piss their parents off with.

Then there's The Scissor Sisters. I can't work this band out at all. Laura is a great track, but their Comfortably Numb cover is teeth-gringingly bad, sort of Bontempi meets The Bee Gees.

(Oh, and thanks again to Sam for introducing me to www.allmusic.com, without which this post wouldn't have been the link-fest that it is. ;-)

Erm, so is the Gomez album any good? Seem them live several times, and on each occasion they've been most excellent.

I've only listened to it once, but yes, it's good. Not as good as their first, though.

A bunch of people from here saw them last night. Not only free CDs; they get free tickets, too.

Oh well, each to their own and all that, but I love the Divine Comedy and I'm certainly not a teenager. Mind you, they've been going years and years so I'm suprised you've not heard of them before.

I have liked the new Zutons album and Muse are corking. I'd have to hear more street to find out if there aren't a gimicy band.

Free tickets, free promos? Can't be all bad, and, at least you got something. Maybe I should rep in the music buisness? LOL!

I was listening to the new Streets album in HMV this afternoon and it does indeed sound pretty good. And normally I'd rather wash my mouth out with nitric acid than listen to 'urban' music.

Top listening chez Todd at the moment is, of course, Marbles by Marillion. Top tunes.

I've also got the Scissor Sisters and I think it's rather good, although they could have cut out the middle man and just got Elton John to record all of the tracks ;-)

Snow Patrol aren't half bad either.

As for Muse, warmed over half baked Raidohead wannabes. You can keep them.

SWMBO is a big Divine Comedy fan, so step carefully there old chap.

OK, so can somone *explain* Divine Comedy to me, then? It sounds like Las Vegas lounge music to me.

Muse, "warmed over half baked Raidohead wannabes"? There's a certain similarity in style, true, but Muse are *better* than Radiohead, I'd say. Though I do like Radiohead too.

Never heard of Snow Patrol. I'll look them up.

What do you think of the The Scissor Sisters' Comfortably Numb, Andy?
