The acronym tag

Am I abusing XHTML's acronym tag if I use it to mark up abbreviations as well as actual acronyms?

Am I a pedantic arse?

I know I'm abusing it when I use it to hide rude messages in peoples' names, but that's another matter entirely...

Isn't there an abbr tag?
What do I know, I didn't even know about either tag until I started looking at this site.

So there is[1], Darren. I wonder how I managed to miss *that*? I'll use it in future, anyway.

I wonder why there are two tags? After all, acronyms *are* abbreviations, so the 'abbr' tag is all you need...

Careful though, I read somewhere that IE ignores it, so maybe test it first.

So it does...

There we are then, continue abusing the acronym tag.

I don't know the answer to the first question but I DO know the answer to the second.
