Most Windows users have WinZip on their PCs. Naturally, almost none of them have registered it. WinZip is good software, supporting just about every archive format around. Explorer integration is good, and command line support is available, so you can script it.
Me, I use Ultimate Zip instead. It's free (as in beer), and just as good. But I'm looking for a free as in speech equivalent. Any suggestions?
Posted to Software by Simon Brunning at October 31, 2003 08:52 AMhave you tried Gzip ? There's even a version for OS400.
The only problem I had with Winzip, is that it doesn't like files over 4GB. WinRAR does though.

Posted by: Mark Boyce on October 31, 2003 09:30 AMHTML comment posting is disabled, so your hyperlinks disappeared. Not to worry – I know about gzip, and I could have googled for it easily enough even if I didn’t!
Gzip is great – I use the version that comes with the GNU utilities for Win32 from http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/
But it’s not a replacement for WinZip or Ultimate Zip. I want the Explorer integration that these give me, and I want to create zip files rather than tar.gz files for some audiences. Not everyone can read tar.gz files, so we always send out zips by default.
Hm, why not write one in Python?
Using ctypes and venster, I would suggest ;-)
Ooh, ooh, how had I missed Venster? Cool stuff!
But in fact, I probably wouldn't *want* a GUI at all - I do all my zipping and unzipping directly from Explorer. Hans shows how to integrate Python scripts into Explorer here:

I'll give it some thought...
