Outlook one, Simon nil

I've been having a bit of a struggle with Outlook '97 today. Outlook is winning.

Yes, yes, I know, Outlook sucks, and I shouldn't be using it. Is there anything better that I can use, bearing in mind that my company is using Microsoft Exchange 5.5 as a server?

Err, two cans and a piece of string?

AFAIK you can use any POP/IMAP client to talk email. The killer is the 'collaboration' features like the diary, to do list and shared folders. The only other client I know of that talks to the full exchange server is Evolution by Ximian, and that only runs on Gnome.

So, unless my ignorance is sweeping (and it might be) you are stuck with Outlook. As am I.

Strangely enough, I have two cans and a piece of string on my desk.

They won’t connect to Exchange properly either...

Well, at least one of my colleagues uses Outlook Express here, with our Exchange server, and it is basically a standar POP client; I'm fairly sure that I've connected Eudora at some point in the past. I even think that one guy has been known to use KMail.

However, I suspect that it may depend on what options the Exchange administrator takes; I would guess that it's possibly to not support standard POP and SMTP.

I did discover that Exchange (again, at least our server) was using IMAP when I connected to it with JavaMail.

Oh yeah: one other thing is that our SMTP server is on a different machine from the actual Exchanges server; so you may just have to know the machine...
