Meet them half way? Not a chance.

So, the Catholics are boycotting Pullman, are they? The film makers should have stuck to their guns and left God as the villain of the piece in the first place.

I know, I'm going to boycott them right back.

Oh yes, that's right, I already was.

Urgh. Pretty as the trailer looked, I'm really nervous about those films. Why can't they leave the source material alone? God is, you know, kind of important in them. Especially the fact he SPOILERS dies. Or at least: the Authority dies. "God"'s role becomes subsumed into a) the general position of rule in heaven but b) Man perhaps no longer requiring him in "that way".

They're not just adventure books about kids; they're placing that in the context of, you know, the war in Heaven and a shift from Theism to mankind doing stuff for himself (actually, I'd never thought of them as being about Man's progression from childhood through adolescence, but it makes sense - no longer needing parents, he achieves things on his own once he's banished them). Admittedly, a slightly more Gnostic take on the War in Heaven, but still.

I get the feeling the films are going to be very disappointing, regardless of whether or not the Catholic Church go to see them or not.

And that's before we get into asshatted comments about "are the angels in book three gay?". I've always liked Pullman's responses to that question, too.

I hope they don't change the ending (of the trilogy), too, but I bet they do. The most bittersweet conclusion, and one of the bravest acts of self-sacrifice, in literature.

Instead, we'll get a Hollywood-style happily-ever-after, I bet.

Incidentally, your comments form has some objection to hyphens in email addresses, which is strange.
