Channel 4 is running a poll to decide which of the UK's vilest buildings should be demolished. The Tower in Colliers Wood is currently topping the poll.
I walk past The Tower (or The Brown and Root Tower as long-time Colliers Wood residents still call it) at least twice every day. And it's true - it is hideous. But it's been there for as long as I can remember, and I've lived in Colliers wood, on and off, since I was four. I remember using it to find my way home when I was lost. So, I have a funny kind of affection for the thing.
Besides, there's just about zero chance of it actually being knocked down - it would take out the tube line beneath it if you just blew it up - so it's all a bit of a waste of time really.
Posted to The Big Room by Simon Brunning at March 02, 2005 11:31 AMI have to say that when I was looking at flats in Colliers Wood that tower was a real negative. It is indeed one of the most hideous buildings I think I have ever laid eyes on and since it's pretty much on the doorstep of the tube station it's nearly the first thing you see of Colliers Wood. Not good advertising.

Posted by: Simon Brunning on March 2, 2005 12:55 PMI don't think that taking note of an eyesore slap bang in the middle of place when you are thinking about moving there counts as failing to look past first appearances. By that measure, no one should have any objection to living in, say, Hull. So ner.
Posted by: Katherine on March 2, 2005 02:07 PMOther than the tower, what else didn't you like about Colliers Wood, then?
Posted by: Simon Brunning on March 2, 2005 02:39 PMAs it happens, I was dead set to move there, but the flat I was after insisted I would have to stay for a year and I only needed 8 months. So that hideous tower didn't put me off completely, but Colliers Wood would surely be nicer without it.
Posted by: Katherine on March 2, 2005 04:30 PMHas anybody any idea when this monstrosity was built?
Posted by: Ian O'Sullivan on April 21, 2005 03:48 PMI know that iw was some time in the '60s, but that's about it.
Posted by: Simon Brunning on April 21, 2005 04:01 PMI can't defend the appearence of The Tower, but as no one likes it its value has plummented thereby allowing not for profit organisations such as the Wandsworth and Merton Law Centre to move into comfortable spacious surroudings, with a great view from the top of both the North Downs and the City of London. It has also provided fame for the otherwise anonimous suburb of Colliers Wood
Posted by: Will on December 19, 2005 10:24 AMAs ugly as hell!! Must be demolished!!! The worst thing of it??? The COLOUR!! How can anyone choose such an ugly shade of black for such a tall building??? What a lack of taste....
Posted by: DS on June 19, 2006 02:34 PMI worked in The Black Tower for many years. If it's any consolation, it's worse inside than it is outside. Some interesting stories...
1. If you look closely you will see places where bits of concrete have spalled off. Also about 22 years ago it was surrounded by scaffold as they replaced the windows, seemingly they sometimes used to fall out.
2. There is a ghastly spiral car park next to it, at the top of which the builders have signed their name "the Breffin boys", I think in about 1970 but I cannot be sure. Out the back was another car park called "the coal yard" where you could get your radio nicked if you left your car there for a day.
3. It used to be within 20 minutes' drive of half a million people but since they built the even ghastlier shopping centre there, the drive time has gone up to an hour or so. At least the black tower has character.
4. You're right - Brown and Root used to occupy it. It was the scene of many famous North Sea Oil and Gas projects, and could arguably be the most significant building in the history of the North Sea. Don't knock it down, put up a blue plaque!
5. Next door is Wandle Park, an expanse of green with a smelly ditch that periodically used to flood when the Mighty River Wandle burst its banks. And nearby, a wonderful scrapyard where you could buy your radio back.
6. Before the Savacentre was a big concrete factory called the Board Mill that was knocked down in about 1987. A mecca for rats and other wildlife (we used to watch birds of prey feasting on the vermin...) Colliers Wood has gone up in the world!
disgusting!
