I've been linking to the fabulous beerintheevening.com for a while, but I've not come across its wonderful random pub crawl generator before. Truly technology in the pursuit of human happiness.
The also have some themed crawls listed. They have the Monopoly crawl, which I've done much of on my 30th. (I got as far as Rose and Crown, Old Park Lane. We figured that we didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting into Henry's in our condition, so we pissed off down to The Frog and Forget-Me-Not and finished off getting pissed. It was pints of wife-beater all the way - how I survived that I don't know. I know we were still in The Grand at two in the morning, despite having started at noon...)
They also have a few Northern Line based crawls; the Barnet branch, and the middle section. They are missing a Southern Branch crawl, though, so here is my modest (incomplete) proposal.
Anyone care to fill in the gaps?
Posted to Beer by Simon Brunning at October 18, 2004 05:17 PMWe (beerintheevening) did actually do the south bound section of the Northern line way back in March 2002. For your missing bits:
- For Oval, The Hanover Arms
- For Clapham, The George
- For Tooting Bec, The Wheatsheaf. I seem to remember a woman asking who was playing (there was a footy game on), yelling "Come on Chelsea!" for about thirty seconds then getting bored and leaving.
- For Morden, Ganleys. Your assertion about not wanting to end up there is very sensible, that's why we did it backwards.
Other choices look good, Stockwell particularly as The Swan was closed so we ended up in a pub so horrifying I cannot even speak its name.
Have fun in pursuit of beer.

Posted by: Mike Wood (BITE inner circle member) on October 19, 2004 12:01 PMHmmm. Doing it backwards makes a lot of sense. Not only do you miss out Morden's fistfight hour, but you can end up at the Swan for an all-nighter. If it's open, that is.
I'll check out your other suggestions at some point. Thanks, Mike.
Posted by: Simon Brunning on October 19, 2004 12:09 PMFor good reason is Morden nicknamed "Mordor" round here.
Posted by: Mark Matthews on October 19, 2004 12:47 PMI thought about contributing one for Northern Sydney, but there is only one pub every couple of miles and no convenient tube, so I'll just suggest;
Manly - The Steyne
If you get bored of the beer you can always go for a surf ;-)
Posted by: Andy Todd on October 20, 2004 11:22 PMSort of related to the random pub crawl generator is http://www.throngalong.com which "was originally known as "The Random Pub Generator" and was developed to solve the age-old problem of deciding where to go out for a drink in the evening."
Basically you set up a shortlist of favourite pubs (or clubs, restaurants etc), add a list of friend's email address and choose a date and time. Invitations are sent out with a link so everyone can RSVP. The venue is selected at random at the time the invitations are sent out. The date can be recurring so you can have it go off automatically every week, choosing a different pub each time.
