Phonograph Blues

Bugger - The Kings of Leon CD, Youth & Young Manhood, won't bloody rip. Bastards. I paid for that fair and square, I did, and I'm not up to anything nefarious.

Double bugger - still no iPod. :-(

Still, plenty of ripping this morning:

Update: El Presidente has managed to rip Youth & Young Manhood using MusicMatch JukeBox, so I'll just grab his MP3s. Thanks, Paul!

I've been using iTunes today. I struggled with it briefly - I tried to get it to name and organise my MP3s the way I had been doing it. It wasn't having any of it. But in fact, the way iTunes wants to organise eveything is pretty nice, so I let it have its own way. It reorganised all my existing stuff for me, and all's well now.

Is this how Mac software is? You have to work its way, but if you do, everything gets organised for you? Sort of like being married...

I no longer play CDs on anything resembling a normal CD player. So if I were to buy one of those CDs I'd have to take it back.

Saying that, a colleague of mine bought one by mistake but I could play it under Linux fine, didn't try ripping it though.

Either rip it on a proper operating system, or disable auto play on insert for your CD drive. The nice people at the record companies put a little program in the boot sector (which is ignored by CD players) which convinces your (Windows) computer that it's a data CD.

As for the Mac software, welcome to the cult of the usability designer. Sometimes they do take it too far (iTunes and iPhoto are good examples of that).

The best software balances an intuitive and easy to use interface (for those who just want to use the software) with serious configuration for the power user (who likes to fiddle) and the closest I've got to this nirvana is on the Mac.

The ease of use I can see, and there are some seriously nice little touches[1]. iTunes has really grown on me - it's lovely software.

But I can't see any sign of the "serious configuration for the power user (who likes to fiddle)" in iTunes. I miss it.

But please, burn that White Stripes album. Your ears will thank you for it.
