Steve McConnell's Code Complete is one of the best books on software construction ever written, IMNSHO. Every standards manual (or as I prefer to call them, coding style guide) I've participated in since I came across Code Complete has been based upon it.
So it's great to hear that there's going to be a second edition. This new edition covers the construction of OO software, which the first edition did not. The draft is on line - looks good.

Posted to Software development by Simon Brunning at February 27, 2004 02:11 PMTo my shame my copy is sitting on the shelf at home, unread. I have read one of his other books (professional software development - http://www.stevemcconnell.com/psd.htm ) and was frankly unimpressed. I think its basically a re-hash of the mythical man month with far too much discussion of the software engineering body of knowledge (http://www.swebok.org/). For instance he goes into great detail on which skills different levels of people should possess (yawn). Its practically a skills matrix, and don't get me started on them.
Which is probably why Code Complete is still languishing in my to read pile.
