No Internet at work today...

So, no blogging. For whatever reason, our poxy proxy server was denying everyone access today. And will continue to do so until somone works out what the f**k is going on.

Everyone, that is, except Tracey for some bizarre reason.

Anyway, phase 2 of moving is now in progress - unpacking. Sigh.

It's because I'm so nice & kind & friendly to my PC, and never hammer on it's keyboard, beat up it's mouse, or eviscerate (a much better work than defenestrate, don't you think?) it's wrist-rest, or wear out my internet welcome with non-stop surfing.
And, of course, because the furry beanbag dragon protects it from the evil influence of the proxy server.

Or it could be because I have Jacada for Windows' Winsock drivers installed, and don't use the proxy anyway...

Cheers
Tracey

PS - best of luck with the unpacking.
We've been here 6 years, and still have several tea-chests in the garage...

Cheers again,
Tracey

Mate - we've been in our flat for about three months now and most of our books are still in boxes . On the upside, I'm hoping that Mark's bad fantasy novels will stay there...

at least you don't have surfcontrol www.surfcontrol.com, it lets evo through though!

Well, hopefully when all my wikkid fantasy books are unpacked we can leave all the naff chick-books like The English Patient in the dusty recesses of our flat, out of sight and thankfully out of mind :-)

'The English Patient' - that well known 'naff chick-book' that just happened to win the Booker Price - is that the one you mean? The one written by a well-known and respected male author about deserts and the Second World War?

Posted by: Katherine on September 4, 2003 03:02 PM

Undoubtedly a well written romance novel with sweeping desert panoramas, coz it won the Booker Prize (respect for that). But it's still Chick Lit: Just coz a guy wrote it, it's set during a war and it has at least one soldier and a gun in it, does not mean it's not a namby pamby romance novel, which it is.

Are there any killer robots? Or fire-breathing dragons? Even an elf or two would do...

No need to show off, Katherine. We all know that you are above Mark's level intellectually - you don't have to rub his nose in it. ;-)

Thanks Simon, that's a real help :-) This coming from a man, who in this age, has his Blog set up to look like a Terminal session. White ink on black backgroud, I ask you. Unsless you have some Goth roots you're not telling us about? ;-)

Less is more, my friend. Less is more.

Sorry mate, but you really did choose the wrong book to pick on. Whilst the English Patient is indeed a romance novel, that in no way makes it either 'namby pamby' or naff. Homer's Odyssey is in many way concerned with romance, but I'd like to see anyone accuse that of being 'Chick Lit'. And actually, since when does a book written for women automatically qualify as 'namby pamby' or 'naff'? If I didn't know you better I'd accuse you of mysogynistic tendencies with that one. And to go around slinging mud on basis of 'namby pamby'-ism is pretty rich coming from you! People - this man cries at films more than I do...

I agree, Katherine - Mark's sexual politics *are* rather suspect. Recently, I referred to a film as a 'chick flick', and he *rushed* to assume that I was denigrating it, clearly demonstrating his low opinion of women.

I put it down to ignorance, myself. I recently had to explain to him the difference between gender and sex.

Me, I understand women very well. Hence, I'm single. ;-)
