Steve is looking for sample programmer aptitude tests. Any suggestions?
This one is funny, but Steve is looking for real ones.

Posted by: Babu on August 27, 2003 12:15 PMI'd say attitude is much more important than aptitude. If someone has the right approach you can always teach them the skills they don't have.
And, regardless of the name, most aptitude tests are more successful at figuring out what you know rather than how you think. Even if they do determine the way you approach solving problems (which is quite important in our line of work) the person evaluating them is often unaware of the implications of the results.
Posted by: Andy Todd on August 27, 2003 12:42 PMUnfortunately in a buyers market they call the shots. If they want you to be called Julie and be able to play the nose flute then you'd better be called Julie and be able to play the nose flute. In Joel Spolsky's "Guerrilla's Guide to Interviewing" he hits the nail on the head. "Is he smart?" and "Will he get thing done?"
But to be fair we did shaft them on the Y2K thing so it's time to get even.
Ho hum!

Posted by: Zev on August 28, 2003 04:03 PMIt is only aptitude which reveals your mental ability to solve some problem & that's why aptitude tests are very important.

Posted by: amit on October 9, 2003 02:09 PMI've found that giving programmers tough problems of a mathematical nature (but not requiring any more math than a 10th grader) is a very good predictor of programming aptitude. I know a lot of people don't like those tests, but they work very well at separating the "men from the boys". Microsoft tends to use many such questions in its interviewing process as do many other high tech companies. I have carefully used these tests to very reliably predict a programmer's performance.
