Java layout managers are a total pig - I can't tell you the hours I've wasted fiddling, trying to get my GUIs to look just right.
Of course, things might have gone more smoothly if I knew what I was doing. ;-)
In the end, I ended up writing my own layout manager. But I don't think that I'd have had to had this been available at the time - RelativeLayout, a Constraint-Based Layout Manager.
Posted to Java by Simon Brunning at September 20, 2002 01:27 PMSimon, the phrase "trying to get my GUIs to look just right" made me laugh so hard I think I've broken a rib, um yes, it definitely smarts a bit too much. Because this is a public forum I wont go into how much your GUI design remind me of the pictures on your desk that you kids did. “just right”, “just right” ha ha ha
Posted by: El Presidente on September 20, 2002 02:27 PMI want to recommend RiverLayout as an alternative layout manager. RiverLayout is a flexible, yet very easy to use layout manager that JAlbum makes heavy use of. RiverLayout is inspired by the way html formats text. RiverLayout is similar to FlowLayout in the sense that the UI components flow, usually from left to right, as they are added to a container, but control strings like "br", "tab" and "p" can be used to better adjust the location. The "tab" string for instance greatly simplifies the construction of forms. RiverLayout is LGPL licensed.
